The Israeli Defence Minister lives on the Green Line border between Israel and the West Bank, opposite the lemon grove of Salma (Hiam Abbass), a Palestinian widow. The security forces are quick to declare that Salma’s lovingly-tended trees pose a threat to the Minister’s safety and issue orders to uproot them. Salma stands up against her neighbour and goes all the way to the Israeli Supreme Court to try to save her trees.
As we follow Selma’s legal and personal journey and her fight to survive, we learn a great deal about the complexities and chaos, dark but sometimes comic, that characterise the ongoing struggle in the Middle East.
