Beck's Music Box :: Tony Allen

Tony Allen

Described as ‘perhaps the greatest drummer that ever lived’, Tony Allen is a pioneer of the style known as Afrobeat – a fusion of jazz, funk and African highlife.

Coming to prominence in the 1960s as a collaborator of the legendary bandleader Fela Kuti and now a bandleader in his own right, Allen continues to be a fascinating innovator in modern music. He has collaborated with contemporaries Damon Albarn (The Good, The Bad and The Queen) and Groove Armada.

This six-piece band is driven by Allen’s ever-changing rhythmic variations. Together they create a compulsively watchable blend of Afrojazz and Afrobeat grooves – you won’t want to miss a beat!

Without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat
