The Great Southern :: Crossed Tracks
Roman de Gare
Director: Claude Lelouch · 103min · M
In French with subtitles
What is real and what is fiction? Claude Lelouch’s multi-layered movie is a glossy melange of suspense and romance – a thriller populated by offbeat characters including a runaway husband, a serial killer nicknamed the magician, a ghost writer and a hairdresser.
Set around the French riviera, this psychological study centres on Judith Ralitzer (Fanny Ardent), a famous crime writer whose works, it is rumoured, may have been ghost-written by a serial killer. Lelouch has fashioned a tale of intrigue and deceit that moves along like a 60s Hitchcockian whodunnit. Nothing is quite as it seems and fate has a way of making friends and lovers out of the least likely people.
