The Great Southern :: Fugitive Pieces
Director: Jeremy Podeswa · 104min · MA
In English, Greek, Yiddish and German with subtitles
Director Jeremy Podeswa’s sensitive and intelligent adaptation will draw comparisons with both The Pianist and Schindler’s List. Podeswa skilfully preserves the lyrical flow of imagery and complex emotions in Anne Michaels’ much-admired novel about Jakob, a Polish boy who witnesses the massacre of his family by the Nazis before being rescued by athos, a kindly Greek archaeologist. Athos smuggles Jakob to Greece before migrating with him to toronto at the end of the war.
Spanning 35 years from 1942 to the late 70s, this beautifully-crafted film has a simple message – life can heal us if we allow it.
Best Actor (Rade Serbedzija), Rome Film FestivaL 2007 Jury Prizes for Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Film, Best Screenplay, Newport Beach Film Festival 2008 Audience Award, Sarasota Film Festival 2008
