The Great Southern :: Tulpan

Tulpan
Tulip

Director: Sergei Dvortsevoy · 100min · M
In Kazakh and Russian with subtitles

Polished, funny and charming, Tulpan tells of a family of nomadic sheep herders not just surviving but also relishing a harsh life in a barren landscape.

Tulpan is a young girl being pursued by Asa, a young man living with his sister’s family after a stint in the navy. tulpan is not just the only girl for Asa, she’s the only girl for miles around in the largest landlocked country on the planet. Asa has not yet established himself as a herdsman, so he cannot get a herd, and he can’t get a herd until he’s married. Such is his dilemma.

This timeless and endearing coming-of-age tale by Kazakh filmmaker Sergei Dvortsevoy is a must-see for those who loved The Story of the Weeping Camel.

First Prize, UN Certain Regard, Cannes Film Festival 2008 Golden Eye, Best Film, Zurich Film Festival 2008

The isolation is unnerving, but it also clarifies the inherent drama of this family. There’s no need for Dvortsevoy to impress us with symbolism. The reality is the metaphor. And that sense of The Other that Sasha Baron Coen used to make his Kazakh character Borat so funny, is nowhere to be found

It’s a pleasure to watch. We get a real sense of this barren land where the sun bears down on those trying to make a living there
