Waltz with Bashir

Director: Ari Folman · 90min · MA
In Hebrew and German with subtitles

Waltz with Bashir is a surreal, dreamy mix of graphic novel, animated drawings and real life events, with a fabulous music score. Ari Folman’s groundbreaking venture explores memories and hallucinations in this autobiographical account of enlisting in the army as a teenager in the early 80s during Israel’s largely forgotten war with Lebanon.

He has a recurring dream in which he struggles to retrieve lost memories. Seeking truth, he swaps yarns with men from his old platoon until a complete picture of this dark period of history emerges.

Strikingly original, the film’s spellbinding visual imagery mixes reality, dramatisation and delirium with a wilful freedom to tell a powerful story.

Golden Globe Award Winner, Oscar Nominee 2009, Best Direction, Best Script, Best Sound Track, Best Artistic Design, Best Editing, Israeli Academy Awards 2008
