Music :: The Little Match Girl Passion
Perth International Arts Festival with Tura New Music presents
Theatre of Voices
Acclaimed for their exquisite performances of medieval and Renaissance masterpieces and exciting collaborations with today’s leading composers, Paul Hillier’s Theatre of Voices presents a beautifully-structured program that links ancient to modern.
The evening commences with glorious sacred music from 12th–15th century France, including Pérotin’s Viderunt omnes. Finding ‘inspiration and guidance’ in Pérotin’s breathtaking polyphony, Steve Reich’s Proverb suspends ethereal voices above a shimmering accompaniment of electronic organs and vibraphones.
Co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall especially for Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices, David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Setting Hans Christian Andersen’s fable in the format of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Lang elevates the suffering of the little match girl with his poignant, evocative music.
