Music :: Pacifica Quartet plays Mendelssohn
In three exquisite recitals over two days, the Pacifica Quartet present the string quartets of Felix Mendelssohn in celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth.
Recognised for their virtuosity, exuberant performance style and often daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet’s superb recordings and performances in prestigious venues across the US, Europe and Asia have brought them international acclaim.
Known as the ‘classical romantic’, Mendelssohn infused classical form and refinement with romantic lyricism. His quartets chart a stylistic evolution from the early quartets with their debt to Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, through the great Op. 44 quartets, an exquisite balance of classical form and expressive melody, to the grief and anguish that haunts the late F minor quartet.
The Pacifica Quartet are then joined by four of Perth’s finest string players – Paul Wright, Shaun Lee-Chen, Alex Brogan and Eve Silver – to perform the Octet in E flat, one of the pinnacles of Western string chamber music.
