Stimmung
Theatre of Voices

Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Stimmung is one of the greatest vocal works of the 20th century, one that redefined the very notion of what vocal music could be.

Since its first performance in Paris in 1968, Stimmung (translated as ‘tuning’, ‘mood’, or even ‘frame of mind’) has mesmerised audiences across the world. Now Paul Hillier, whose vast experience with this work includes performances guided by Stockhausen himself, brings this classic to Perth.

Over a chord built entirely on the overtones of a single note, six amplified singers hum, chant, sing and recite intimate poetry. The result is a hypnotic sonic ritual of exquisite colours and extraordinary resonances.

Performed in the round in the spacious acoustic of Winthrop Hall, Stimmung is a truly transcendent experience.
