Sebastian Barry was was born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College where he edited Icarus. His academic posts have included Honorary Fellow in Writing at the University of Iowa (1984) and Writer Fellow at Trinity College (from 1995 to 1996). He built his reputation as a highly esteemed award-winning playwright with works such as The Steward of Christendom, Our Lady of Sligo and The Pride of Parnell Street. He has since gained praise for both his poetry and novels. His novels include The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty and Annie Dunne. He was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize twice, for A Long Long Way in 2005 and for his latest title The Secret Scripture in 2008.A Long Long Way was also shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
